ACTIV-5: BIG EFFECTS TRIAL (BET)
A clinical trial testing several potential treatments for adult COVID-19 patients staying in the hospital.
WHAT IS THE STUDY ABOUT?
This study is seeking to determine which of the investigational medications are most effective in helping people who are in the hospital with COVID-19 recover faster. The investigational medications that show the most promise for better treatment may be studied further. This study is hoping to answer important research questions, including:
- Which investigational treatments for people in the hospital with COVID-19 help them recover faster?
- Do the investigational treatments work better than the current treatments?
If you join this study, you will get the usual care for COVID-19, plus either one of the study treatments or something that looks like the study medicine but has no medicine in it, called a placebo. You will be asked to take part in this study from the time you are in the hospital and then for up to 60 days from the time you enroll. While you are in the hospital, the study team will assess your health daily. After you are discharged from the hospital, members of the study team will assess your health status in person or by phone 3-5 times (through 60 days after you entered the study).
WHO CAN JOIN THIS STUDY?
If you recently tested positive for COVID-19, this study may be for you. Clinical trials testing COVID-19 treatments need people from diverse backgrounds. This will help researchers find treatments that are safe and work for more people. Each person who takes part in the ACTIV-5 BET study will meet specific conditions, including:

At least 18 years old

Currently in the hospital due to COVID-19

Documented COVID-19 infection within 72 hours of enrollment or within the past 7 days but your symptoms are getting worse

ANSWERS TO OTHER QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE

A clinical research study helps experts find treatments that are safe and effective. It is important that these studies include people from diverse backgrounds. This helps researchers develop new treatments that will work for more people.
The placebo looks like the study medication but does not have any active ingredients in it. Researchers compare how people react to both placebos and medications to learn if the medication is safe and helps people recovery more quickly. If you join this study, you will get the usual care for COVID-19.
Yes. Taking part in this clinical trial is voluntary; it is your choice. You can change your mind at any time and leave the study.
